Manger au restaurant ? Il y a quelqu&#039;un brandissant un thermom\u00e8tre \u00e0 la porte. Vous vous rendez dans un immeuble pour une r\u00e9union ? M\u00eame chose. M\u00eame lorsque je m&#039;arr\u00eate pour me garer dans l&#039;immeuble o\u00f9 je s\u00e9journe, je dois baisser ma fen\u00eatre pour qu&#039;un pr\u00e9pos\u00e9 puisse tenir un thermom\u00e8tre devant mon visage pour s&#039;assurer que je n&#039;ai pas de fi\u00e8vre. La fi\u00e8vre est le premier signe d&#039;Ebola et je vis \u00e0 l&#039;\u00e9picentre de l&#039;\u00e9pid\u00e9mie.<\/p>\n<p>C&#039;est juste la nouvelle normalit\u00e9 ici. On ne se serre pas la main quand on se salue. Nous nous lavons les mains tout le temps, principalement dans des stations de lavage install\u00e9es \u00e0 l&#039;entr\u00e9e de chaque b\u00e2timent. Il y avait une certaine hyst\u00e9rie ici au d\u00e9but de l&#039;\u00e9pid\u00e9mie, me dit-on, mais les magasins et les restaurants dans les rues que je marche ici \u00e0 Monrovia sont ouverts maintenant et c&#039;est comme d&#039;habitude. Nous sommes vigilants, mais nous sommes calmes. Il est difficile d&#039;attraper Ebola. Nous savons que ce n&#039;est pas un simple contact qui propage cette horrible maladie. Ce sont les infirmi\u00e8res et les m\u00e9decins qui soignent les malades \u00e0 risque, les proches qui r\u00e9confortent physiquement ceux qui sont malades, ceux qui tentent de pr\u00e9parer les morts \u00e0 un enterrement convenable.<\/p>\n<p>Je suis arriv\u00e9 au Lib\u00e9ria le 10 octobre et je pr\u00e9vois d&#039;y rester aussi longtemps qu&#039;il le faudra pour changer les choses. D&#039;ici le mois prochain, nous serons une \u00e9quipe de six personnes sur le terrain (trois Am\u00e9ricains et trois Lib\u00e9riens) ici avec le Centre des programmes de communication de l&#039;Universit\u00e9 Johns Hopkins, financ\u00e9 par l&#039;USAID pour soutenir la r\u00e9ponse du gouvernement lib\u00e9rien \u00e0 l&#039;\u00e9pid\u00e9mie d&#039;Ebola. Notre travail ici consiste \u00e0 communiquer avec les Lib\u00e9riens au sujet d&#039;Ebola, \u00e0 apaiser les rumeurs et la peur et \u00e0 leur donner les informations dont ils ont besoin pour se prot\u00e9ger et prot\u00e9ger leurs familles contre Ebola.<\/p>\n<p>Le premier message, d\u00e8s les premiers jours de l&#039;\u00e9pid\u00e9mie, \u00e9tait qu&#039;Ebola est r\u00e9el. Il y avait beaucoup de questions et de doutes. Les conspirations \u00e9taient partout. Ce message passe maintenant. Nous sommes maintenant pass\u00e9s aux nouveaux messages\u00a0: Pratiquez une bonne hygi\u00e8ne, comme le lavage r\u00e9gulier des mains. Si quelqu&#039;un dans votre maison est malade, demandez de l&#039;aide et n&#039;essayez pas de le soigner vous-m\u00eame. Gardez la personne malade isol\u00e9e. Si quelqu&#039;un dans votre maison est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9, demandez de l&#039;aide et ne touchez pas son corps. Nous avons aid\u00e9 \u00e0 renforcer le centre d&#039;appel qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 mis en place pour fournir cette aide. Nous pensons que les messages passent.<\/p>\n<p>Bient\u00f4t, nous esp\u00e9rons passer \u00e0 la phase trois : accueillir \u00e0 nouveau les survivants dans la communaut\u00e9, comme les h\u00e9ros qu&#039;ils sont.<\/p>\n<p>Lorsque j&#039;ouvre mon ordinateur portable et que je lis les gros titres des \u00c9tats-Unis, j&#039;ai du mal \u00e0 croire le niveau d&#039;hyst\u00e9rie \u00e0 tant de kilom\u00e8tres. Le risque est tellement minime. Seuls ceux qui ont directement soign\u00e9 des patients aux \u00c9tats-Unis sont tomb\u00e9s malades et pourtant les gens ont peur de se rendre \u00e0 Dallas ? Cela n&#039;a aucun sens.<\/p>\n<p>Peu de temps apr\u00e8s mon arriv\u00e9e ici, j&#039;ai assist\u00e9 \u00e0 un grand briefing de l&#039;OMS et j&#039;ai entendu un rapport de Lofa, un comt\u00e9 du nord du Lib\u00e9ria. Les donn\u00e9es indiquent que les choses commencent \u00e0 changer l\u00e0-haut. Un leadership fort et motiv\u00e9, associ\u00e9 \u00e0 une communaut\u00e9 engag\u00e9e, semble faire la diff\u00e9rence. Ce n&#039;est pas l&#039;histoire partout. She has worked on a diverse range of projects with a demonstrated focus on helping to create a new generation of African health communication professionals. She built the capacity of individuals through the \u201cby the youth for the youth\u201d HEART campaign which, launched 15 years ago in Zambia, and remains a part of the vocabulary of Zambian youth today. She also mentored Zambian youth through the entire run of Trendsetters, a youth sexual and reproductive health newspaper initiated by the Youth Activists Organization football camps, and supported the launching of the Bauze Youth Centre by African Directions, which now operates 3 youth centers in Zambia. As Senior Technical Advisor, Capacity Building for the Tanzania Capacity and Communication Project (TCCP), Elizabeth designed and launched an innovative mentoring program called ACE- Advancing Communication Experientially.
